President William Ruto has assured that more Kenyans will find employment with American companies operating through the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) framework. Speaking at an event with Kenyans living in the United States on Monday, May 20, at the Cobb Galleria Center in Atlanta, Georgia, Ruto highlighted that 5,000 Kenyans have already secured jobs through this framework.
Understanding Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) involves contracting the operations and responsibilities of specific business processes to a third-party service provider. This approach allows companies to focus on their core activities while outsourcing other processes.
Ruto’s Speech on Digital Jobs
During his address at The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum on May 20, 2024, Ruto emphasized the potential of digital jobs to provide significant employment opportunities for Kenyans. “That space of digital jobs is the real space that can give us opportunities for Kenyans to work. Last week, I am not talking about last year, I am not talking about last month, I am talking about last week. I was in Ruiru where we were commissioning a BPO that is going to hire 5,000 Kenyans, one BPO,” Ruto stated. He added, “They are going to be doing online jobs. That particular BPO by CCI has JetBlue, AT&T, all American companies.”
Largest Call Centre in Kenya
On Friday, May 10, President Ruto inaugurated a new five-story BPO facility at Tatu City, Kiambu County. This facility, billed as the country’s largest call center, is set to employ 5,000 Kenyans in the short term. Ruto described the center as a vital opportunity for online jobs amidst the country’s unemployment crisis.
Future Expansion and Employment Growth
During the launch, CCI announced plans to construct a second building at Tatu City, aiming to double its workforce in Kenya to 10,000. However, Ruto revealed on Monday that this target has now been doubled to 20,000 by 2026. “CCI in the next two years will be hiring 20,000 Kenyans. We are working with many of those companies to create such spaces not only in Ruiru but other Kenyan towns,” he said.
